FTP Programs

You've built your web site, signed up with a web hosting service, and now you need to upload your web files from your computer to the web server online. You need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program that will copy your files to the server that is provided by the web hosting service.

Ask your web hosting service provider if they recommend a particular FTP program. You can usually find information on FTP programs in the Help or Support sections of your service provider's web site. FTP programs are also available from shareware sites such as ZDNet Downloads.

Step 1: Download an FTP program.

Examples of popular FTP programs are WS_FTP for Windows and Fetch for the Mac OS. For example, here's the download page at ZDNet Downloads for WS_FTP: :

	FETCH for Mac: Fetch is a Macintosh program for transferring files over networks, such as the Internet, using the FTP or SFTP. Rename, move, delete, and change the permissions of files on a web server in order to maintain a website. Publish images for eBay auction listings.
